Lake Bled – a five minute drive or a twenty minute walk
One of the most picture perfect sights in the world is that of Lake Bled with the Church of the Assumption perched on Bled Island in its middle.
Grad Bled (Bled Castle) – a five minute drive or a twenty minute walk
Once home to the Bishops of Brixen, the castle dominates the lake today as it has for centuries. Many are so taken with the stunning views from the courtyard terrace, that the chapel, the museums, the printing press, the winery and the restaurant are overlooked.
Vintgar Gorge – a ten minute drive or a thirty minute walk
More than a kilometer of rapids, waterfalls and crystal clear plunge pools tumbling through a steep sided gorge, accessed only by a cliff-hugging timber walkway.
Soteska Pokljuka (Pokljuka Gorge) – a ten minute drive
In my opinion, this rivals the nearby Vintgar Gorge as a natural wonder and has the advantage of being almost unknown to the visiting tourist.
Lake Bohinj – a forty minute drive
The part of Slovenia that the travel industry has hidden for itself, so go there before everyone discovers this secret.
Ljubljana – an hours drive
The bijoux capital city boasts a charming old town, magnificent castle and architecture dominated by local talent Jose Plecnik.
Vrsic Pass – fifty minutes to the first hairpin
A mind twisting series of fifty hairpin bends take you up from Kranjska Gora and down to Bovec through some absolutely spectacular mountain scenery. Time it right and board the train with your car for an unusual return journey to the Bohinj valley.
Postojna and Scocan Caves – a ninety minute drive
Two simply incredible cave systems of the Kaarst Region of Slovenia.
Lipica Stud Farm – a ninety minute drive
For over 425 years, the breeding home of the famous Lipizzaner horse of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Over 400 horses for show, riding and competition.
The coastal towns of Piran and Portoros – a two hour drive
No neighbouring towns could be so different yet both are widely admired. Portoros a mini Miami Beach with volleyball, pumping music and casinos. Piran a model of Venetian sophistication with shaded squares and fine sea-view dining.
